What are the main rodents that may require rodent control?

House mice (Mus musculus)

House mice – the most common in Belgium – are dusty grey with a cream-coloured belly. The fur colour varies from light brown to dark grey. House mice have four legs and a round body. Their muzzles are pointed and their ears are large with some hair. House mice are 6 to 10 centimetres long. Their tails are 7 to 10 centimetres long. Mice have twelve molars and four incisors and although the molars do not grow in adulthood, the incisors are continually growing.

BROWN RATS (RATTUS NORVEGICUS)

The brown rat – also known as the sewer rat, is the most common in Belgium – it is a medium-sized, robust, greyish or brownish rodent with coarse fur and a long, scaly tail with sparse hair. It has a round body shape and four legs. The tail – which measures 15 to 20 cm – is shorter than the combined length of the head and body, which is between 17 and 23 cm. The underparts and toes are greyish to whitish. Rats also have twelve molars and four incisors and although the molars stop growing in adulthood, the incisors never stop growing.

There are several methods of trying to get rid of mice, or rats. Prevention, trapping or using poisons. A professional pest controlist will be able to recommend the most effective method.

OTHER SPECIES PRESENT IN BELGIUM THAT MAY REQUIRE DERATTING

Wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus)

The Wood mouse has relatively small ears and a height of around 9 cm. It weighs about 23 g.

Red-collared Mouse (Apodemus flavicollis)

The red-collared field mouse is similar to the deer mouse in general but has a longer tail and larger ears. They range in size from 9 cm to 13 cm, with a tail length of the same size. Its weight varies between 28 and 43 g. It has a band of yellow fur behind the neck.

Black rat (Rattus rattus)

The black rat is light brown to black in colour. It has a relatively lighter bottom than the rest of the body. An adult black rat is usually between 13 and 18 cm in height, with a tail length of 15 to 22 cm. Its weight varies from 75 to 230 g. It is relatively smaller than a brown rat and has a much more massive coat.

What are the signs of a rat or mouse invasion?

A NEST OR COLONY OF RATS IN YOUR HOME

The nest where a colony of rats or mice has settled can be located in various places. Most often, it is located in attics, behind your appliances, under the floor or even in unused cupboards.

HOLES IN FLOORS OR WALLS

Rats are rodents that like to dig. In gardens, in cracks in the walls of your house or in compost heaps, it is common to find traces of their passage in the form of gaping holes. They use these holes to hide, to store their food and to shelter their young.

EXCREMENT FOUND ON THE GROUND

Rat or mouse droppings are very common when you are infested. They are usually up to 1.5 cm in size and shaped like a grain of rice. A normal rat can produce about 35 droppings per day.

TRACES AND FOOTPRINTS

Rats and mice can leave traces of their passage by leaving their footprints on the dusty floor of a warehouse or garage, but also by depositing grease from their fur.

DEGRADED WOOD OR ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS

If there’s one thing rats, mice and other rodents have in common, it’s that they love to gnaw. Whether it’s cardboard, electrical wires, wood or even plastic, if you find teeth marks on unlikely objects, chances are you’re dealing with a mouse or rat invasion.

SUSPICIOUS NOISES COMING FROM THE ATTIC OR WALLS

Mice and rats are sometimes more vocal than visually noticeable. This is especially true when they are located in the walls or attic. At night, when your home is quiet, if you hear footsteps coming from the attic or false ceilings, it is probably a rodent roaming around.

Rodent damage or why you should be rodent free as soon as possible

In addition to causing problems of insalubrity, they are often responsible for damage to your furniture, insulation or electrical cables. In addition to this, it is important to remember that these rodents are vectors of disease and can quickly contaminate your home and the food available to them.

If you are a professional, the risk of consequences is particularly high. Rats and mice can destroy your stock of products in a warehouse, put you in a very delicate situation with regard to the FASFC if you are a restaurant owner, or put you at risk of prosecution if you are a landlord.

It should be noted that municipalities also have obligations in terms of rat removal so that rats and rodents do not become a problem in their administered areas.

Whatever your situation, an invasion of rats or other rodents is not to be taken lightly and requires deratting as soon as possible.

Our experts are at your service 7 days a week and 24 hours a day to intervene quickly and efficiently.

What methods are used for rat removal?

To get rid of rats and mice for good, several techniques can be used.

Prevention techniques

If you want to avoid rodent control in the first place, the first thing to do is not to leave an environment where rats or mice can settle.

So, sealing off accesses such as cracks, holes and other places where they might hide is a must if you want to avoid a recurrence.

Read this article to find out more about basic tips for keeping your home free of all kinds of pests.

Natural tips and rodent traps

There are many tricks and traps for rodents. These techniques are not sufficient for a real mouse or rat infestation, but they can help if you want to catch a stray or repel rodents to places that are less of a nuisance.

Professional methods and treatments

When a rat or mouse infestation is severe, there is no choice but to derat with professional products. Fumigation or spraying is often used. These products are, of course, dangerous and should only be handled by experts in order to carry out a safe rat control.

How much does a professional rat removal cost?

The price of a rat removal depends on many factors: the infected area, the surface, the type of rodents, the extent of the invasion and many others.

Depending on these parameters, we will provide you with a free quote to avoid unpleasant surprises. Check out our professional pest control price guide for more information.

If you’re wondering whether you, your landlord or your lessor should foot the bill, we invite you to read this article to give you some food for thought.

Types of rat removal offered by EDN

RODENT CONTROL IN THE ATTIC

Both rats and mice are particularly fond of attics. If you hear suspicious noises coming from your attic, it is very likely that you are dealing with a rodent infestation.

Our attic pest control services will help you to find peace of mind and put an end to the noise, health and property damage that rats and mice can cause when they move into your attic.

GETTING RID OF RATS IN A HOUSE

Sometimes a pest control service is needed to remove rats that have taken up residence in your home.

Whether they are in your kitchen, basement or in the walls of your home, we will remove the rats from your home to ensure that your home is rodent free.

PEST CONTROL INTERVENTIONS IN THE GARDEN

Gardens are prime targets for rats and mice. If you are suffering from an invasion of rodents in your garden, it is entirely possible to have your garden rotted.

A garden deratting will prevent rats and mice from spreading in front of your house, invading your vegetable garden or infecting your pets with their pathogens.

RODENT CONTROL IN FLATS

You might think that living in a flat protects you from a rat infestation, but it does not. Living in a flat can leave you just as vulnerable to a rodent infestation as living in a house with a garden.

It is therefore sometimes necessary to carry out a rat removal in your flat when the invasion has become serious, or even to remove several flats in the same building when the invasion has spread.

Deratting interventions for condominium managers

Sometimes a building-wide rodent control is necessary to get rid of a rodent infestation. This may be organised by the building manager or landlord to prevent a rat or mouse infestation from spreading, or to treat a building where several flats are already affected.

To avoid having to derat all the flats in a building, it is strongly recommended that the flat or flats initially affected be deratted as soon as possible.

Rat control for restaurants

Restaurants are places where hygiene is paramount and where an invasion of rats or mice has no place. If you observe these rodents in your establishment, it is necessary to carry out a deratting as soon as possible to avoid legal problems.

We can intervene as soon as possible to derat your restaurant, or we can offer you annual maintenance contracts to help you manage the pests in accordance with the FASFC and avoid future deratting.

DERATTING IN STORAGE PREMISES

Storage rooms and warehouses are regularly targeted by shameless rats and mice, who do not hesitate to damage your stock and help themselves.

Whether you are a food business, a retailer or a storage company, we can derat your storage facilities to ensure that your stock is not at the mercy of merciless rodents.
